Float tanks come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but the experience is always the same: effortless weightlessness. Each tank is filled with about one foot of warm water and over 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt, creating a dense solution that allows your body to float naturally with no effort at all.
The primary benefit of float therapy is deep relaxation — for both the mind and body. As your muscles release tension and your nervous system slows down, many people experience a calm, meditative state that supports stress relief, recovery, and mental clarity.
Float tanks are also known as isolation tanks or sensory deprivation tanks. The first float tank was developed in 1954 by Dr. John C. Lilly, a neuropsychiatrist who studied the effects of reduced sensory input on the brain.
At Mellow Float, all of our float rooms allow you to experience this quiet, low-stimulation environment. If full sensory deprivation feels intimidating, you’re always welcome to keep the lights and music on. You can even play your own music, just ask our staff to pair your phon to the system when you arrive. Your session is entirely customizable to your comfort level.
We offer 60-minute private float sessions, with the room reserved exclusively for you. Our studio features three unique float rooms, each with a different style of tank and its own theme to enhance your experience.
You may choose to float solo, or share the experience with a guest. Our Constellation Room is designed for two people to float together, making it a great option for couples or friends.
Floating is not only relaxing; it’s enjoyable and restorative. Since our bodies are made up of approximately 70% water, being in a float tank can have an immediate calming effect on the brain. Research suggests that this gentle, buoyant environment can increase the release of neurochemicals that promote happiness, reduce stress, and support overall mental well-being.
Float therapy utilizes Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique (REST), where sensory input is minimized to allow your mind and body to deeply relax. By reducing external stimulation, REST helps lower stress, anxiety, and even depressive symptoms.
Studies conducted at the Float Clinic and Research Center (LIBR) have shown that clinically anxious participants experienced lower anxiety levels, decreased muscle tension, and reduced stress-related pain after float sessions. Research continues to show that sensory reduction in float tanks can “shut down” certain sensory pathways, leading to increased relaxation and mental clarity.
Floating is like soaking your entire body in a warm, magnesium-rich bath. The gravity-free environment takes pressure off muscles, joints, and the spine, allowing them to rest and recover. Blood flow increases naturally, helping muscles rejuvenate, tension dissipate, and the spine and neck gently elongate.
The high concentration of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) in the water also helps relax sore muscles, reduce inflammation, and support protein synthesis; making float therapy a powerful tool for athletes or anyone looking to recover from physical activity.
Float therapy can also be beneficial for individuals with arthritis, fibromyalgia, sciatica, and other chronic pain conditions. The high salt content provides buoyancy, reducing pressure on joints and relieving stiffness. Warm water further relaxes muscles, increases circulation, and may help alleviate pain.
Because float therapy is non-invasive and drug-free, it is recognized as a safe and effective complementary approach to traditional pain management methods, supporting improved mobility, reduced discomfort, and a greater sense of overall well-being.

Go in Without Expectations
Your first float is a unique experience and it’s different for everyone. The key is to come with an open mind and no expectations.
You don’t need to be a meditation expert to enjoy your first float. Simply relax and allow yourself to enjoy the experience. Many people find their second float more relaxing, as they are familiar with the space and the sensation. By your third float, confidence grows, allowing both your mind and body to fully let go, release stress, and release built-up tension. Every float is a unique journey.
Your First Float
Before your first session, we recommend:
Settling in the Float Tank
Many first-time floaters notice a slight bobbing in the tank. Here’s how to stabilize yourself:
Before your float
To make the most of your session:
After your float
Take some time to integrate the experience. Floating provides a rare opportunity to completely disconnect. Returning immediately to daily chaos can be jarring.
At Mellow Float, you’re welcome to linger in our cozy lounge, enjoy free warm tea or kombucha, and take in the peaceful surroundings just steps from Lake Ontario.
